The Road

The Road - Cormack McCarthy

Well, I saw the previews for the movie long before I knew about the book, and the previews looked interesting and I saw the book at Best Buy before going on a trip. So I decided to make the purchase. This book was terrible, sentence structure was crap, and the plot was almost nonexistent.

I'll save the trouble of reading this poo nugget: A guy and a kid walk around, camp, and occasionally find something to eat. This book doesn't explain anything, you have no idea what happened to the earth or what they're running from. When they do find a place they could stay comfortably for a while, they leave like morons, because it's not safe for some reason.

The Giver

The Giver - Lois Lowry

Yet another stop on my dystopian road. This also appeared on the list of the top ten dystopian books, so I decided to give this a shot as well. It took me a while to locate it at the bookstore because I didn't realize it was considered a 'teen' book. I decided to go ahead and read through it anyway, and was glad I did.

This book details a perfect world where everything is neat and orderly, and anything unsavory is swept under the rug. There is only one person that knows the true nature of all the goings on of the town, and he is called 'The Giver'. This book chronicles the happenings in the town as a new batch of children 'graduate' and are given their jobs. The main character is selected to receive all of the memories and wisdom from The Giver, but eventually decides that this isn't the life for him.

Neuromancer

Neuromancer - William Gibson

I came across this book when I was on a big dystopia kick, and this happened to be on the list of the top ten dystopian novels, so I decided to give it a shot. This book provides the first instance of the word 'cyberspace', but this was really all it was notable for. I thought it was slow-moving, poorly written, and hard to follow. I am usually able to visualize things well in my head, but Mr. Gibson was unable to paint a vivid picture for me
