The 5 A.M. Flight I Almost Canceled

I nearly canceled the trip the night before.

The alarm was set for 2:40 a.m., my bag was already packed, and I kept staring at the booking confirmation wondering why I had chosen such an unreasonable departure time. The flight left at 5:05 a.m., and every part of me wanted to change it to a later flight.

The only reason I kept the booking was the price.

When I first searched for flights, the afternoon options were surprisingly expensive. The early departure was more than $120 cheaper, and at the time I told myself that losing a few hours of sleep was worth the savings.

At 3:15 a.m., the city felt completely different. The roads were empty, the airport entrance was quiet, and the usual stress of traffic and long check-in lines simply wasn’t there. Security took less than ten minutes, and I found myself sitting near the gate with a hot coffee while the sky outside was still dark.

That was the first moment I understood why early morning flights are often cheaper.

Most travelers prefer to fly at comfortable hours—after breakfast, before dinner, and without having to wake up in the middle of the night. Airlines know this, so flights that depart before sunrise usually attract fewer passengers. To fill those seats, they often offer lower airfare compared with popular daytime departures.

As boarding began, I noticed something else: the flight was almost entirely on time. A crew member mentioned that it was the first flight of the day for that aircraft, which meant it wasn’t waiting for a delayed incoming plane from another city. That explained why frequent travelers often say that early departures can be both cheaper and more reliable.

A few hours later, as the aircraft climbed above the clouds, the sun began to rise. The cabin windows slowly turned orange, and for a few quiet minutes everyone seemed to stop talking and simply watch the light spread across the horizon.

By 8:30 a.m., I had already landed, collected my bag, and reached my hotel while many of the later flights were still preparing to depart.

What This Flight Taught Me

That trip changed the way I book airfare now.

I no longer search only for the most convenient departure time. I compare:

  • Before 7 a.m.
  • Midday flights
  • Late-evening or overnight departures

Sometimes the savings are small, but on many routes the difference can be significant enough to cover airport transportation, meals, or even an extra night of accommodation.

The experience also reminded me that cheap flights are not always about secret travel hacks. Often, they come from being flexible when most other travelers are not.

My Quick Journal Note

If you’re planning a trip and trying to reduce travel costs:

  • Check early morning flights before booking a midday departure.
  • Compare late-night or red-eye flights for longer routes.
  • Calculate the total trip cost, including transportation to the airport.
  • Don’t assume the cheapest-looking ticket is the best value unless the overall travel expenses are lower.

That 5:05 a.m. flight was uncomfortable, quiet, and far earlier than I wanted.

It also became one of the smartest travel decisions I made that year.

Sometimes the flights we are least excited to take are the ones that leave the most money in the travel budget—and the most memorable sunrise in the journey.
