Do Electric Cars Need Maintenance?
The most appreciated part of owning an EV is the low maintenance. EVs do not need oil changes, spark plugs, or exhaust. With regenerative braking, and overall fewer components, petrol cars are way more complicated than EVs.
But it shouldn’t be assumed that minimal maintenance means an EV will require no maintenance at all.
As more customers start to consider purchasing EVs, questions regarding the service aspects of EV ownership become relevant. Such questions include what needs to be serviced and how often, amongst a series of other available service options. Service-related questions become more important as the overall market begins to expand. Why EVs Naturally Need Less Work
With EV ownership comes the ease of maintenance, and the role of vehicle design is a factor.
Inside a gas-powered vehicle, the engine contains multiple moving parts, creating a complex system, with multiple components such as pistons, valves, and belts, which over time can create wear and tear. Inside the EV, the motor is simple, typically containing under 20 moving parts, creating a system with less friction, less heat, and a lower chance of malfunction.
Unlike other vehicle types, EVs even skip oil changes, fuel filter replacements, and changes to timing belts and spark plugs, reducing the long-term costs of service visits.
The Maintenance EVs Still Can’t Escape
Despite the many advantages EVs bring, they will always need maintenance to ensure the reliability of the vehicle.
Battery Care Comes First
The battery of an EV constitutes the core of the vehicle and one of the most pricey components. Because of this, taking care of the battery pays off, especially since simple habits can go a long way. Try to avoid extreme temperatures and don’t rely on fast charging. Remember to keep software up to date and, if possible, use a Level 2 home charger. This will help slow the aging process of the battery better than constant rapid charging.
Tires
Instant Torque, and the power that comes along with it, is also tough on the tires of the vehicle. EVs, especially the powerful ones, can chew through tires a lot quicker than petrol-cars. Maintaining tire pressure and getting regular wheel alignment and tire rotation is necessary to improve the lifespan of tires. This can be done on a 5,000 to 7,500 mile interval.
Brakes
Though regenerative braking does help with the lifespan of the brake pads, and that is a win, brake fluid, and the other components do still need to be replaced and inspected every so often.
Cooling Systems
Most EVs rely on liquid-cooling systems to keep the battery at optimal temperatures. Over time, coolant levels can drop or degrade. Periodic checks help to avoid overheating the battery, especially in warmer climates.
Suspension and Steering are No Exception
Road conditions impact EVs in the same way they impact any vehicles. Shocks, struts, bushings, and steering components wear down. Regular inspections are needed to keep ride quality smooth and handling predictable.
The Bottom Line for EV Owners
Electric vehicles absolutely reduce the stress of maintenance. That’s one of the main selling points. However, EVs are not maintenance free.
A little attention goes a long way. Look after the battery. Watch the tires. Don’t ignore checks on the suspension and fluids. An EV will stay efficient, reliable, and enjoyable for years.
