My thoughts on health care in Aust, as expressed in a national health survey

The problems, as I see it, stem mostly from a lack of funding in critical areas, and too great a pressure put on the wider Medicare system. Improving these areas would likely improve staffing shortages (ie, doctors and nursing staff), reduce hospital waiting lists, and generally allow better use of the funds we currently have for community awareness and vital preventative health reforms. A 'user pays' system simply does not work in health care - each member of a community has value, and adds value to their community environment, regardless of their financial status. Eliminating Private Medical Insurance gap fees and placing a higher Medicare Levy on those of a substantial income without private insurance would, in my view, help reduce many of the problem areas in our health system, merely by reducing the immediate pressure on Medicare-funded services. If large businesses and corporations were also encouraged through tax rebates etc to donate specifically to medical, medical research, general community health and exercise, and sustainable energy/environmental organisations (over preferences for, say, major sporting organisations), then there would also be an immediate flow on effect to healthcare as a whole, making the taxpayer's health care dollars get 'more bang for it's buck', so to speak.
