Major Construction Projects in Oman

Keeping in mind the relatively small population of Oman (around 4 million), the scale of construction projects in this middle-east nation is quite impressive. In the past two decades, the public sector has invested heavily in large construction projects across the country. Rapid infrastructure development has significantly contributed to the overall growth of the country.

Just like most other middle-east nations, oil and gas is the most important sector in Oman. There are a number of exploration and production projects in Oman. Apart from oil and gas, there are many other industries that have significant projects under construction. These include transportation, power generation, tourism, housing, health care and wastewater management. Several highways and hotel projects are in the advanced stages of planning in Oman.

Some of the major projects that are currently under construction in Oman include-

Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre

Set to open in 2016, Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre will be one of the most iconic landmarks in Muscat. It will host conventions, exhibitions and economic events. The project has been built with an approximate cost of US$1 billion.

Oman’s National Rail Network

The 1,061km national rail network in Oman is being built in phases and is expected to be completed by 2018. This project will be linked to the proposed GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) railway system. It is one of the most ambitious railway projects in the middle-east region.

Batinah Expressway

The 265 kilometer long 8-way Batinah Expressway will connect Muscat Expressway with the Oman-UAE border Khatmat Malaha. Most of the work on this project is expected to be completed by the year 2017. Several tenders were floated by Oman’s Tender Board, which handles major government project, in 2014 and 2015. The first part of this project which runs from Muscat to Barka was recently opened by Ministry of Transport and Communication.

Other New Projects

Oman government has recently awarded new construction projects worth $274m. A $124.2-million construction project has been awarded to the UK-based construction group Carillion. The project involves construction of a residential complex at the Khazzan tight gas project site in Central Oman. The construction of a TV Digital Transmission Facility for the Public Authority for Radio and TV is another major project that has been awarded by Oman government.

With so many new projects in the pipeline, Oman’s Tender Board is expected to float many new tenders for construction projects. Many of these are small scale and medium scale construction projects. As the construction activity continues in full swing in Oman, this is a good time to invest in the upcoming construction projects in the nation. There are many reliable websites where all the information related to construction projects in Oman is available.
