Resolution: Cosmetic Surgery should be banned.
" />
Definitions:
· Cosmetics: A superficial measure to make something seem better than it is.
· Surgery: treatment as an operation performed by a surgeon
· Banned: Forbidden by law
First Constructive:
Look at the figures on the board. What do they share in common? This is what society considers “perfection” The slender body with a youthful face. Who has been successful? Celebrities. The role models of today don’t promote the motto “ Beauty is in the eye of the beholder but “ The younger and smaller the better.” Instead of Americans trying to achieve the smaller body with exercise and diet, they choose to just go the doctor and change it. The mentality of the world today has greatly changed from before where people wanted you to learn to be comfortable with your body rather than spending every waking moment trying to be someone else.
Contention 1: Cosmetic Surgery is just being used as an social enhancement.
- Everybody wants to be like everyone else. Celebrities with the muscle, the small figures, and the perfect faces. Makeover shows on television, which according to psychotherapist, Andrea Scherzer, “modern TV reality shows which focus plastic surgery… have a worrying impact on teenage girls in the throes of puberty. Lead by media and advertisements people are seeking cosmetic surgery for the wrong reasons. Girls do it either to be what their boyfriends want or because they want to fit in. Maybe if my chest was enlarged, I would have more friends and boys is becoming the motto of teenage girls. Older men in their 40s, 50s, and 60’s do it to keep up with the younger generation. With role models like Pamela Anderson, older women seek to fit in with the younger generation by getting curvy slim figures.
- Cosmetic Surgery is a quicker way to achieve the goal of perfection. According to the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, cosmetic surgery has become a hit with the men to change image maintenance and deal with change. In the Health section of BBC News, an article states that of 3,000 women question, Ninety percent said their body made them feel down. The inspiration models according to this article are Madonna and Sean Connery. Also stated in this article was two thirds of women are so unhappy with their body that they would undergo plastic surgery to achieve the perfect look
Contention 2: The money put into Cosmetic Surgery can be used for more important causes.
- Obviously the cosmetic surgery takes at least millions of dollars. Plastic Surgeons are becoming rich while people leave doctor offices with bigger and tighter things. People make it seem like after getting cosmetic surgery, all their body problems will poof into thin air. That surely isn’t the case. With the attitudes people possess today, no matter how much surgery they intake, there will always be something “wrong with their bodies” Eventually the botox will wear off or the butt lift may even begin to sag. Instead of people spending all this money on a phase. They should donate to important causes or at least use their money to better themselves. When going to the plastic surgeon’s office and making an appointment think about all the starving kids in Africa. Or think about your children at home who are failing school but have everything they want. Matter fact, think of the little children who are suffering with cancer and can’t afford to get treatment. No how about this. Just think of the stack of bills on your kitchen table which you haven’t paid.. Once or twice let that cross your mind. According to historian Haiken, only 23 percent of patients come from families earning more than $50,000 per year. Families with incomes under $25,000 account for 30 percent of patients, while those earning between $25,000 and $50,000 account for another 35 percent.” Seriously there really must be more important things in your life to give this money to than saving up your money to get a butt lift. Which I may add cost $ 4,878.
Contention 3: Not a good example for younger generations.
A. With statistics like two thirds of women are unhappy with their body, lessons learned and advice about life are no longer being passed down. Rather than love yourself, you hear the number one lesson is making sure the doctor has good credentials. Not only does this affect the youth of America but all over the world. Washington Post reported that cosmetic surgery is being accepted all over the world by places like China. When a child and her mother can both be in the doctors office talking about the surgeries they are going to get it is a problem. Two thirds of 2,000 girls surveyed average age 14 said the pressure came from perfect celebrities and boys. Girls can’t turn to their mother mainly because the mothers aren’t even comfortable with themselves to give advice. So the child ends up following in her mother footsteps. You know the saying “ the apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree.” As time progresses more and more teens are getting cosmetic surgery.
Contention 4: Reasons why cosmetic surgery aren’t good enough.
A. One reason may be to keep you from getting wrinkles. Or another may be so your husband don’t leave you. Every reason why can’t be accounted for but I can estimate the most of them aren’t good enough. According to the New Atlantis a journal of science and technology, after a while the person is still going to age and all the surgeries received are no longer going to withstand.
