Happy Birthday St. Nicholas

Effective immediately, the sun has grudging agreed to stop snipping pieces off the end of the day. However, the practice of shortening the beginning of the day will continue for another month.

Confessions of a pollwatcher

The judges in the three precincts at my polling place were old-timers and real pros, though I've heard that wasn't the  case in other precincts.

If we must have electronic voting, the software should be open source (like the Aussies) and the wireless transfer of totals to the election board must be encrypted. I think I've found a (non-partisan) cause. Aux armes!

Carpenter, make coffin

Yesterday the sun...blinked.  For about a second.  Just short enough to doubt your senses; but long enough to confirm your fears.

Function prototypes allow for the separation of class member function declaration from its member function implementation. This is accomplished by the creation of two separate files: a header file and a source code file. The source code file ties the declared member functions to their implementation by the use of a binary scope resolution operator (::). The purpose of this separation is to keep client programmers from tying main function operations to member function implementation, which would cause the program to break should there be subsequent changes to the member function implementation.

All class objects must be initialized by a constructor. If explicitly declared as a member function, its body can perform additional tasks, like passing the class object's argument to a data member. In the absence of a declared constructor, the program will implicitly provide a default constructor.

Get and set  member functions, in conjunction with private  data members, allow the manipulation of data while hiding the process of manipulation from the clients of class objects.

The parameters of a member function are just undefined instances of the parameter type. They are not defined until called in main, at which time they are assigned values that must be previously defined in main.

The getline function permits the incorporation of an entire user-generated string, including spaces. The format is: getline (cin, stringName).

After you create a class with its member functions you have to instantiate it  by creating a class object in main which can then call the member functions using the dot operator.

Fantasy Baseball

If McCovey's liner had been 6 ft. higher the Giants would have won the '62 World Series instead of the Yankees.

If you redefine every line drive to an infielder as a double, and then rescore the game according to the progression of the rest of the box score, how often would that change the outcome of the game? Or season?

In other words, what exactly does it mean to say that "it's a game of inches"?

Trickle On Down

How can I help the rich-people-in-charge make this country more safe and prosperous?

Dear Branch

The shorter the series, the more salient the luck.

Go Sox.

A House Divided

I sectioned my living room in half with a floor-to-ceiling curtain made from the silverized bubble-wrap that contractors use as inside-wall insulation. In the summer, it saved me the expense of buying a larger air conditioner. Now that it's Fall, and the landlord is delaying the boiler startup, I can keep the area warm with an oil-filled electric radiator.  Keeps the cat happy.

Self Destructing

Throwing cookies to Ramirez and Thome is as good a way  to beat yourself as any. Did you notice that Pierzienski left his mask on on Griffey's throw to the plate to nail Cudayer? He really is nasty. But he's our nasty.

Now the odds are very long (we stink). But we're in the game; and in short series sometimes the best teams don't win.

Do Or Die

"The White Sox loaded the bases later in the second, and Juan Uribe hit a grounder to third that Jamey Carroll couldn't handle. Ken Griffey Jr. scored on what might have otherwise been an inning-ending double play."

Since the White Sox can't beat anybody on their own, the Tigers and the Twins will just have to beat themselves.

Link Bait

I am (just) smart enough to know that I have nothing substantive to say. However,  I think of my entries as a way to craft a voice, rather than attempting to communicate. But then,  why the public entries? It's an open question. If someone blundered upon my entry on vacuuming, I expect it might cause a minor chuckle. But certainly this entry is completely useless. I guess I'll go private...

To the Twins: I told you so.

The Hard Part

It's easy to beat a really horrible team like the White Sox. But now the Twins will have to face a real team. The Royals are 8-2 in their last ten games.

In New York we called them Woolybuggers

If it weren't for dust bunnys, how would you know where to vacuum?

White Sox update.

I have this strange feeling that it doesn't matter how many games this awful team loses; they're going to win the division anyway.
