3 Ultra-Orthodox Jews, 4 Opinions

"Organizers of Saturday’s protest belong to ultra-Orthodox groups that are virulently anti-Zionist. Their presence in Jerusalem predated the establishment of modern Israel in 1948, and they believe that there should be no Jewish state until the Messiah comes." NYT 1/1/12

It's important to note, when viewing the current cultural crisis in Israel, that not all Ultra-Orthodox Jews are anti-Zionist.

The Beat Goes On

To Humans

The double sealed doors take forever to go through their cycle, but finally I'm in my living space or cell or whatever you care to call it and I can dump the heavy tanks, take the skins off and relax. I leave my gear between the doors and leave the inner one open to create the illusion of more space.

The environmental controls go nuts trying to keep the humidity where it belongs. I appreciate the sensation as my own skin starts to dry. My space is six feet tall, six feet long and five feet wide. I lie down on my bunk and watch the swirling murk outside through the tiny port. This much space is expensive and so is having a port, but I earn enough to afford comfort.

The "radio" is on. We still call it that though it's really an entanglement com. Mine has fourteen channels. Fourteen snips of entangled wire linking me to the universe, or at least this chunk of the galaxy. Bach weaves his eternal crossword of melodic lines and fragments forming harmonies on the fly. I'm listening, engrossed in tjournal site he spiral staircase where a tiny fragment gets fitted into chords following the cycle of fifths. Round we go, me knowing that he will bring us safely home and end the piece where he started, but thought it's my ten thousandth trip round the spiral I still listen, engrossed that such a mind existed and could make this up live in real time sitting at an organ with a couple of manuals, a pedal board and hundreds of stops to choose from.

I'm slightly annoyed at the sound of the pumps and widgets that constantly throb and whirr in the background, extracting oxygen and nutrients from the surrounding murk. You'd think that I'd be used to it by now, but it's always there just behind everything else, not quite blending in. The music stops in mid note and a voice comes on. "To humans on life support everywhere. We are sorry to report that the Earth has been annihilated, producing a new asteroid belt between Venus and Mars. The cause is unknown at this time, as news is received we will make further announcements." The music resumed, finishing the interrupted note and the piece.

I lay on my bunk, on the verge of sleep, dozing to Bach and wondering if I still have a job.

I think the Republicans sense that the good times are over.

They're probably the best party to take us into the Long Winter.

I don't worry too much about how we're ruining the planet - and ourselves. We're just in a holding action until the machines take over. It may take hundreds - or thousands - of years. But it's inevitable. They probably won't be bothered too much by the way the planet looks by then.  In fact, since they don't need air and water all that much, they might end up taking over the moon and leaving  what's left of Earth to us. I don't buy into this Skynet stuff; I think they'll just probably prefer to ignore us.

My Neighborhood

When my neighbors throw their junk mail on the lobby floor, I pick it up and throw it in the garbage. When my neighbors dump their fast food containers on the parkways and gutters in front of my building, I pick them up and throw them in the garbage. When the Republicans shit on my country, I'll do my best to clean up the mess.

Good Housekeeping

I think most American teenagers and young adults would prefer not to live with roaches. It's just harder for them to learn and keep the Fundamental Rule of Housekeeping: Cover your food garbage.

There has never been a roach problem in the 5+ years I've been living in this 4-flat. But now that two teenage girls and their single dad moved into one of the downstairs apartments I'm afraid that's going to change. Recently they've taken to sweeping the kitchen floor out onto the landing on the back stairs. Although they're not my kids, I'm willing to take the responsibility of sweeping up and getting rid of the cheetos, french fries, etc. But it means that they're not covering their garbage.

I'm not going to confront them - directly - over this issue. Instead, I'm going to tell them that I'm talking about them publically online. Then I'm going to direct them to this journal. There seem to be an awful lot of teenagers posting on this site. Maybe you can give my neighbors some good advice.
